A small lesson can make a big difference
Batteries power so much of our everyday lives — from toys and tablets to phones, tools, e-bikes and countless other devices. But as battery-powered products become more common, so does the need for better education about how to use, charge, handle and dispose of batteries safely.
Supercharged! was created to help start that education early.
Through engaging characters, memorable safety messages and age-appropriate storytelling, Supercharged! helps children understand that batteries are powerful tools — and that taking care of them is an important part of keeping themselves, their families and their communities safe.
WHY START WITH KIDS?
Some of the most important safety habits we carry throughout our lives begin with lessons we learn when we're young.
Children are also powerful messengers. They bring what they learn at school, at the library and in their communities back home — asking questions, sharing what they know and sometimes reminding the adults around them to make safer choices, too.
By making battery safety approachable and memorable for children, we have an opportunity to reach beyond the individual reader.
One book can start a conversation.
One conversation can change a habit.
And better habits can help create safer communities.
WHAT WE’RE TEACHING
Supercharged! introduces children to practical battery safety concepts through storytelling rather than fear.
Young readers learn how to:
Use and charge battery-powered devices more safely.
Recognize warning signs such as batteries that are hot, swollen, damaged, wet, smoking, leaking, making unusual sounds or giving off an unusual smell.
Know when to STOP. STAY BACK. TELL AN ADULT!
Understand why charging areas should be clear, uncovered and away from exits or places where cords can become tripping hazards.
Recognize that batteries require special handling at the end of their useful life.
Remember that batteries don't belong in household trash or curbside recycling.
Understand that responsible battery use helps protect families, sanitation and recycling workers, firefighters and communities.
These lessons are incorporated into an adventure children can enjoy — because safety education works best when kids actually remember it.

RYAN FOGELMAN, J.D./MBA
Fire Protection Consultant, Fire Rover
Ryan is a fire protection consultant with Fire Rover, known for his expertise in bringing innovative safety solutions to market. His products have been recognized with two Edison Innovation Awards for Industrial Safety and Consumer Products.
Since February 2016, he has focused on compiling and publishing reports on fires at waste and recycling facilities in the U.S. and Canada, analyzing their impacts, solutions and consequences. His latest report is titled "Fortifying the Front Lines: The 9th Annual Waste & Recycling Facility Fires Report in the US & CAN.
Fogelman is a frequent speaker on fire safety within the waste and recycling industries, emphasizing early detection, fire planning and risk mitigation strategies. He has been a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 401 Hazardous Materials Committee since 2019 and contributed to the NFPA 18A special task force on wetting agents in 2025. His contributions to the field have earned him recognition as one of the "Top 30 Global Fire Influencers" by Fire and Safety Journal Americas.
